Introduction

Understanding the root system of trees can save property owners both time and money. In the Fall of 2017, Hurricane Irma hit Florida causing significant property damage throughout the state. Thankfully, our property here in Central Florida was spared the worst of the damages. However, some of our residents were without water for a while because of a fallen tree. The tree’s root system was wrapped around a water line. When that tree fell, it broke a main line that supplied water to the residents on that block. After repairs were made, the folks living there were under a “boil water order” because of possible contamination to the water. Had the residents there known about the root system of that tree, measures could have been taken to avoid the damage caused by the fallen tree.

Root systems are important not only in the physical world, but also in the realm of theology. Tracing the historical roots of Calvinism gives us a better understanding about the foundation on which this system of theology was built.
